In times of crisis and challenge we do not rise to the level of our expectations but sink to the level of our training and experiences. Crisis and challenge forces our minds and body to search for insight, wisdom and knowledge from our past experiences to know how to address the current situation. Your mind relies upon this past experience to know what to do now. Thus, to prepare for tough and difficult situations in the future you have to train for them today. It is that training that you mind and body will rely upon in the unknown situation and to guide you through. The training, the drilling, and the preparation will guide you through the unknown and help you to be successful. If you haven't trained long enough or hard enough in the past, your mind and body will search, nonetheless, for the best historical analogue to help it in the current situation. If that training and experience is weak or massively insufficient, so will your response to the new situation. We are our training.
The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in combat. Richard Marcinko
