Too often most people do not examine their moral or ethical compass.  While nearly everyone says they have a compass and they believe that it points "true north" most people do not examine the basis of their morality or ethical standard and so cannot clearly articulate it nor objectively examine it to know if it is correct and accurate.  If this were, in fact, the case I do not believe we would have the number of personal and corporate ethical violations that we have nor the exponential increase in rules, regulations, or codes of conduct trying to explain, teach and communicate a moral and ethical standard.  Regardless, a close examination and deep interrogation of one's own ethical and moral benchmarks is something that everyone should do.  Not only for understanding, but also for adjusting as one sees fit to do so.

Never let your sense of morals get in the way of doing what's right.  Isaac Asimov

It is curious - curious that physical courage should be so common in the world, and moral courage so rare. Mark Twain

The truth of the matter is that you always know the right thing to do. The hard part is doing it. Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf
