If you want to know the character of a person you need to examine deeply how they interact with others when they think no one is watching. Look at how they treat others that are "lower" in the organization than they are and how they use their position or title; both within the organization and outside of it. Interact with those that interface with the person you are seeking to "know" and understand how they view this person. It will be more insightful than any commentary you could get from the person themselves.
