It is tough to take a position in an age in which opinions are shouted down because they are not exactly like another's.  But leadership requires us to demonstrate courage.  Edmund Burke once said that "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men [people] to do nothing." which reminds us that we all have the responsibility to step into the discussion to ensure that "evil" does not persist.  And while the definition of what "evil" is can be different depending upon the situation, what is clear is that we should not be surprised if it persists and eventually triumphs if we did not take action to prevent it.  We each have to decide where our personal line is for taking action as our action does not come without consequence or personal perils.  But nevertheless, leadership requires action and so we mustn't let our fear dissuade us from doing what is right.
