Leadership is not a popularity contest nor is it meant to be a dictatorship.  Leaders must find a balance between creating a compelling vision that others want to follow and charting a path that they know is right and what is needed.  There is no doubt that for some decisions and direction the accountability solely lies with the leader to chart a path.  This is the balance that all leaders must find for each situation.  But when leadership is based upon sincerity and creating an environment in which people are respected, valued and appreciated for the work they do and the contributions they make creating momentum towards the compelling vision becomes empowering for all.

Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.  John C. Maxwell

Leadership is not weilding authority; it’s empowering people.  Becky Brodin

I don't want an organization of order-takers because order-takers don't take responsibility for results.  Mike Abrashoff
