We have all heard the phrase "two heads are better than one." This phrase is at the core of good collaboration. As we search out the perspectives, opinions and thoughts of others that are different than our own, we garner more knowledge and insight about the problem or challenge that we are facing. It does require, however, of us, to be open to other's opinions and to reflect carefully about what it is they have to say. We cannot simply default to our own confirmation bias but must work hard to evaluate and integrate all these different perspectives into, hopefully, a even better solution. When we do this well the solutions are better as is the recognition and rewards attract because of the better solution. There is no doubt that this hard to do, but it is what separates a great leader from all the others.
If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants. Isaac Newton
It is the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) that those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed. Charles Darwin
Collaboration and augmentation are the foundational principles of innovation. Vaclav Smil
