My character isn't determined by what I wish it would be, it is determined by what it is and how I react to the challenges around me.  While we may have aspirational goals about the type of person we want to be, it only really matters as to the type of person we are.  And the proof, or evidence, of the type of person that we are are is from the actions we take, the deeds we do, and how we react to uncertainty and adversity.  If you really want to be the person of your aspirations, you must live it.  You must live it every day, with every interaction and in every response to the good things that happen around you and also the things you wish didn't occur.  As Marcus Aurelius so poignantly stated, "Waste no more time arguing what a good man [person] should be.  Be one."

Easy to be great when it’s easy.  Harder to be great when it’s hard.  Robin Sharma

Character also means putting the greater good of the organization and society ahead self-interest.  It’s about worrying about “What is right” rather than “who is right.” Noel Tichy and Warren Bennis

Adversity is what allows you to become intimately familiar with your own true character.  Anonymous
