Many people misinterpret Darwin's theory of evolution as being about the survival of the fittest, or about the strongest being able to survive when the weak die out. This isn't true at all. In fact, the most "fit" or the "strongest" may actually die out early because of their inability to adapt. Darwin's theory of evolution is that those who survive are the ones who can most readily and most quickly adapt to the environment as it changes around them. Being strong doesn't matter if that strength doesn't help you in the new reality, nor does "fitness." And this theory of evolution and the ability to adapt in order to survive does not solely apply to the animal kingdom, it also applies to our leadership, our work and our pursuit of excellence. Adaptation is critical for survival and the ability to thrive. Learn to adapt, modify, change and reject work practices, processes or ideas that no longer work. Do not hang onto ideas and beliefs that are past their expiry date. Instead, be open to adaptation, evolution and improvement. This is not only at the core of survival but also of accomplishment.
