Part of the conscious awakening that occurs, if one is lucky enough to go through one, is the realization that what we experience in the world is simply our own personal perception.  The events of the world simply exist, but it is how we experience those events and the meaning that we put on them that creates our interpretation of them.  And this is how two different people can experience the same event completely differently.  It is why opinions vary and how right and wrong are are interpreted differently for everyone.  It is why Stephen Covey so eloquently stated, "seek first to understand..." As we begin to realize that our experiences in the world are interpreted through the filters of our beliefs, opinions, training, education, perceptions and previous history we become more grounded and undisturbed as we now realize that the triggers to our reaction lies within us.  And with this knowledge, acceptance and even control can result.

Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.  Carl Gustav Jung

What you see and what you hear depends a great deal on where you are standing. It also depends on what sort of person you are.  C.S. Lewis

Because one believes in oneself, one doesn't try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn't need others' approval. Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her.  Lao Tzu
