As part of our personal growth we must challenge our beliefs and not simply take them as a given.  We will encounter people who different beliefs than those we hold and rather than simply dismiss them or the entire person we should pause and reflect upon differences; including the sources of the beliefs that we do hold personally.  If we don't growth is not possible, nor is the potential for learning.  Growth understands that we will encounter different opinions, perspectives and ideas than our own and instead of ignoring them simply out of hand we must examine them closely within the framework of learning so we can add them to our knowledge and expertise where it makes sense.  We still may conclude that the other ideas and thinking are flawed, false or simply misguided, but we do so only after a careful examination of what is presented while understanding the biases that our own beliefs create.

The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend.  Robertson Davies

It is useless to attempt to reason a man out of a thing he was never reasoned into.  Jonathan Swift

A gentleman can see a question from all sides without bias.  The small man is biased and can see a question only from one side.  Confucius
