We all live in a world of our own devising. We do not see the world as it is (although we often believe that we do see it objectively) but rather as we chose to see it. We assess, interpret and judge the events that occur around us and to us through the filters of our own beliefs, values, perceptions, ideas, and aspirations. And while the results of these conclusions are real for us they are not the same for everyone else. Our inability to understand how we absorb and interpret the world and the filters that exist when we do so, prevents us from acknowledging that there may be other interpretations and other truths. It prevents a common understanding from being created so that our individual truths can become "our" truth. To become self-aware is to recognize that we have filters and beliefs that cause us to interpret events in a certain manner and then to challenge them and alter them to allow us to be better.
