For many of us we have been taught and instructed that feedback is a gift. It is something that we receive that allows us, if applied, to become stronger and better. But what many of us don't realize or don't understand is that not all feedback is created equal, nor does it need to be accepted and integrated simply because it was received. Just like a gift feedback can be ignored or placed to the side for potential use later. Just because feedback has been received doesn't mean we have to do something with it immediately or at all. It might not be the right time to take onboard this new insight, we might evaluate it and reject it or don't agree with it, or we might consider the source of the feedback and determine that it's intent is more malicious than noble and so its acceptance is unwarranted. Feedback works for us, and it's acceptance, application and use is under our control. We may miss out on improvement if we reject all feedback, but accepting all feedback without a critical eye and review is equally negligent. And it is this discerning review that is critical when reviewing feedback that you have received. Treat feedback as a gift, in every way, including if it is right for you.

Honesty is a very expensive gift; just don't expect it from cheap people.  Warren Buffett

Feedback is a gift only when it comes from a person you trust.  Anonymous

We all need people who will give us feedback.  That’s how we improve.  Bill Gates
