Ubuntu is an African word that simply means "I am, because you are" and is a philosophy of life that promotes the greater good rather than individual success. It is similar to the concept of servant leadership in that my success is a result of your success, or more succinctly "I succeed because you succeed." Doc Rivers of the Boston Celtics used this word and concept in 2008 to guide the Celtics to the NBA championship and to integrate the personalities of multiple superstars into a coherent team where the success of the team was paramount and superseded that of the individual. And given that the integration of individuals into a unified whole is the challenge of every leader, coach or manager, ubuntu provides a touchstone on how to do this and the potential benefit when it is done well.
Wholeness is not achieved by cutting off a portion of one’s being, but by integration of the contraries. Carl Jung
Unity, not uniformity, must be our aim. We attain unity only through variety. Differences must be integrated, not annihilated, not absorbed. Mary Parker Follett
Teamwork begins by building trust. And the only way to do that is to overcome our need for invulnerability. Patrick Lencioni
