There is a bit of dark side to the pursuit of excellence and of high standards and that is others may not understand. If your standards are higher than everyone else in your circle you will be disappointed by them at times and the subject of ridicule or scorn from them as well. And everyone who chases excellence will need to decide whether to uphold their own standards and endure these slights from others or to downgrade and erode their standards to fit in with the crowd. No one else can make this decision for you, it is one you must make on your own. But the advice we all should heed is to never let the restraints of others be our constraint to pursuing our excellence. While the opinions and advice of others matters do not let it unduly influence the standards you seek to uphold for compromise is a slippery slope to mediocrity.

If you base your identity on having friends, being accepted, and being popular, you may find yourself compromising your standards or changing them every weekend to accommodate your friends.  Sean Covey

Don’t compromise yourself.  You are all you’ve got.  Janis Joplin

It’s not called being picky, it’s called not compromising your standards.  Anonymous
