To build a team or organization that embraces an attitude of excellence means that you must first have one yourself.  As a leader, others take their cues and directions from you and if your instructions and messaging are inconsistent with your own actions and attitude, people will follow what you do rather than what you say.  From there you will need to train, coach and practice the team to create the right attitude and behaviours for embracing excellence and driving towards the desired goals.  It includes creating a culture where people feel valued, respected and appreciated for the work that they do and where they can do their best work every day.  And where everyone gets timely, focused and precise feedback to raise their performance.  It is about training people to be more, be better and to help them reach their fullest potential and its about people being so invested in the success of the team that they are happily willing to do any role or task required of them rather than let the team down and they be the cause of that let down.  For excellence is a full team sport one that requires the fullest of efforts from everyone and the deepest of commitments towards excellence and especially from the leader.  Excellence has no room for entitlement, arrogance or laissez faire leadership, it is the deepest of immersive experiences; but one that generates the greatest of results, returns and sense of accomplishment.

Excellence is a way of life. You develop excellence of character by constantly engaging in it, whatever aspect of life it may be you must always hold yourself to a high standard.  Anonymous
